Collection HCHS Civil War Collection
Catalog Number 2016.261.001
Object Name Medal
Description Shooting Medal awarded to marksmen of the "Lambertville Cadets" Militia Regiment. The obverse of this medal features the 1840 militia style eagle. A reading of the reverse reveals: Prize Medal, Lambertville Cadets, Organized Aug. 1841. The Cadets were one of the few county militia units in the county to be active for more than a few years prior to the Civil War. The prize was for either a drill or shooting competition, both of which were far more pursued in the militia than in the Civil War Army.
Provenance May have been donated by the GAR Post 20 Lambertville. This cannot be confirmed because the original inventory of the donation is missing items 1-15. See "Inventory of Civil War Items in Collection of Hunterdon County Historical Society" prepared by John Kuhl in November 2000.
