Object Name Quilt
Description Pattern: 7-pointed Compass star with vine border on three sides.

Fabrics: Turkey red prints, 2-process green print, white. All cotton.

Backing: White plain cotton, same throughout.

Size Blocks: 15 (7-point) 12-inch circle Compass star blocks, white background between stars.

Set: Stars set 3x5 with 3 inches between star circles. The stars are not set in blocks but in 2 fabric strips. The left strip is 33 inches wide, the right strip is 16 inches wide.

Border: 16 inch wide on 3 sides only, curving green single fabric vine with 15 different applique floral stems with a couple of Turkey Red fabrics for the flowers.

Binding: White cotton, bias grain, less than a half-inch.

Technique: Hand-pieced, hand-appliqued, and hand-quilted.

Batting: Cotton

Quilting: Border: outline, plus more stems and leaves. Stars: By the piece and have crossed circle in the center. Background: More stems, leaves, and tulips, growing from the sides toward the center.

Provenance Made by Kezih Lee Fisher Welsh, ca. 1850 in Fairmount, Tewksbury. Purchased, ca. 1975, by Josephine Miller from Hazel Welsh, widow of Robert E. Welsh, and then donated to HCHS.
