Scope & Content Abstract: This collection is comprised of George W. Hart's genealogical research notes and documentation to support his unpublished genealogical works. These works include "Descendants of John Hart" and "Descendants of Andrew Smith". Anyone researching the Hart, Smith, and related families of Hunterdon County, NJ will find this collection invaluable.

Series Description: The George W. Hart Papers consist of 8 containers and 177 folders. Folders are sorted alphabetically by family name, and the order of Hart's notes was followed as closely as possible, Folders include genealogical research and typed (draft) pages of the "Descendants of John Hart" and "Descendants of Andrew Smith." Although most of the research appears to have been collected during the decade of the 1970's, the materials subject matter spans lineages predominantly from the 18th to the 20th century. The research documentation is primarily Mr. Hart's hand and typewritten notes. There are also many photocopies of already published materials, many with Mr. Hart's annotations.

Scope and Content Note: The research documentation included in this collection varies, ranging from other family lineage publications to newspaper clippings and from family bible copies to handwritten notes on the backs of envelopes. Mr. Hart made inquiries around the New Jersey area and the Country and received many responses.
The main genealogical lines covered are that of John Hart (Revolutionary War era) and various descendant lines (including Abner, Andrew, Daniel, Joseph, Nathan, and Samuel) and those of Andrew Smith. Other family names that are prominent in this collection Include Atchley, Bainbridge, Blackwell, Burroughs, Corwin, Drake, Furman Golden, Hall, Hill, Holcombe, Hunt, Lambert, Lanning, Marshall, Merrill, Moore, Opdyke/Updike, Pierson, Phillips, Scudder, Stockton, Stout, Van Liew and Woolsey.
Miscellaneous folders contain newspaper clippings of weddings and obituaries; extensive notes on cemeteries mainly located in central New Jersey and Bordering Pennsylvania; notes on baptisms, churches, wills, deeds, and land boundaries; and an extensive listing of Hunterdon County marriages.
Admin/Biographical History George W. Hart was born in 1900 and died in 1998. He was married to Helen Mae Hunt who predeceased him in 1997. Mr. Hart's last residence was in Pennington, NJ. He was the compiler and publisher of two manuscripts: "Descendants of John Hart" and "Descendants of Andrew Smith". He was apparently working on a third manuscript, the "Descendants of Paul Hill." The unfinished work is part of this collection.

Access Conditions Manuscript collections may only be viewed at the Hiram E. Deats Memorial Library during open library hours. Appointments for research purposes may also be pre-arranged with the Society’s Executive Director. The retrieval and use of manuscripts, microfilm, and other library materials ends 15 minutes prior to closing time of each open business day.
